Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a form of cancer treatment that uses medications to destroy cancer cells or stop them from growing and dividing. It targets fast-growing cells in the body, including cancer cells, and is often used alone or in combination with other treatment options, such as surgery, radiation, or newer therapies.

At JCH&L, chemotherapy is provided through our onsite infusion center, where patients receive infusion therapy in a monitored, supportive environment. Our team helps you understand what to expect before, during, and after each chemotherapy treatment, including how we monitor you closely and help manage common chemotherapy side effects.

Carly Berkenmeier, RN, an oncology-certified nurse, works closely with the oncologists who order chemotherapy. The Jefferson Community Health & Life Pharmacy mixes and prepares chemotherapy drugs for safe administration according to your individualized plan.

Oncology consultations are available on site. Joni Tilford, MD (oncologist with Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center in Lincoln) and Matthew Shupe, D.O. ( oncologist with Nebraska Hematology Oncology) each visit Jefferson Community Health & Life once a month for patient consultations.

Jefferson Community Health & Life can also take orders for chemotherapy and related services from any oncologist, making it easier to receive care close to home.

Depending on your plan, your care team may discuss types of chemotherapy, including IV infusions, chemotherapy ports, and oral chemotherapy. If your plan includes advanced therapies, we can also help you understand comparisons such as immunotherapy vs chemotherapy, and how your recommended approach fits your diagnosis and goals.
