Influenza and COVID Vaccinations Available at JCH&L

September 23, 2024/by Lana Likens

Influenza and COVID vaccinations will be available at special clinics Oct. 3 and 4 at Jefferson Community Health & Life Fairbury Clinic.

The CDC recommends influenza vaccinations for everyone 6 months and older. October is the optimal time to receive your vaccination.

The CDC recommends a dose of the updated 2024-2025 COVID vaccine. JCH&L will have the Moderna Spikevax vaccine available at vaccine clinics for those 12 years of age and older.

The flu and COVID vaccinations can be given on the same day.

Special influenza vaccination clinics will be offered at JCH&L Fairbury Clinic on Thursday, Oct. 3, and Friday, Oct. 4, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Appointments are required and can be made by calling 402-587-5188. Please be prepared to leave your name, a phone number where you can be reached, and which day you would like to have an influenza and/or COVID vaccine appointment.

When you arrive for your appointment, please use JCH&L’s main entrance, accessible from H Street.  Vaccines will be given in the Clinic Conference room.

Influenza and COVID vaccines will also be available at JCH&L Fairbury Clinic at regular clinic appointments or at a vaccine appointment. Call 402-729-3361, option 1, for an appointment.

When you come to your appointment, please wear clothing which allows easy access to your arm. Bring your health insurance card and a photo ID. Most major insurances and Medicare cover the influenza and COVID vaccines. There will be a fee if you are a private pay patient.

Children 18 and under covered by Medicaid can’t get their influenza or COVID vaccines at these clinics. Please contact Blue Valley Community Action’s vaccination program at 402-826-2141, extension 3, for information on flu and/or COVID vaccinations at BVCA shot clinics.

If you have questions or need more information, please call JCH&L’s vaccination line at 402-587-5188.

Zimmerman Certified as Child Passenger Safety Technician

September 13, 2024/by Lana Likens

Taylor Zimmerman, MOT, OTR/L, a pediatric occupational therapist at Jefferson Community Health & Life Sports Medicine and Rehab Services, has been certified as a Child Passenger Safety Technician. She will offer appointments for individual child seat safety inspections. Appointments can be made by calling 402-729-6840.

Zimmerman also attended the Safe Travel for All Children course to serve children with special needs.

“It is so important that children ride as safely as possible. Proper installation and use of safety seats can help to keep our children safe,” Zimmerman said. “Our goal is to help parents make the safest choices for their children.”

Nebraska law states:

  • Children ride rear-facing up to age 2 or until they reach the upper weight or height limit allowed by the car seat’s manufacturer.
  • All children up to age 8 must ride correctly secured in a federally approved child safety seat/belt positioning booster.
  • Children up to age 8 must ride in the back seat, as long as there is a back seat equipped with a seat belt and not occupied by other children under 8 years of age.
  • Children ages 8 to 18 must ride secured in a seat belt or child safety seat (belt positioning booster).

Statistics show that more than half (62 percent) of all car seats inspected by CPST are improperly installed or used, meaning the children who use them are not as safe as they could be. About 25 percent of children are moved from forward-facing car seats to booster seats too soon, and about 90 percent of children using lap-shoulder belts should still be in a forward facing seat or booster seat.

To schedule an appointment to have a seat checked, call JCH&L Sports Medicine and Rehab Services at 402-729-6840. It is recommended that the child be present at the time of the inspection. Expectant mothers are welcome!

Ohlde, Sutton Now Certified SHIP Counselors

September 13, 2024/by Lana Likens

Lori Ohlde, RN, and Deb Sutton, RN, are now certified Nebraska State Health Insurance Assistance Program counselors.

The federal government, through the Administration on Community Living (ACL), funds a SHIP in every state. The Nebraska SHIP is a division of the Nebraska Department of Insurance. SHIP does not sell insurance, nor does it endorse any insurance company, product, or agent.

Nebraska SHIP has a statewide network of certified counselors and partner organizations. Counselors receive extensive training on Medicare and are available to meet for one-on-one counseling, to help with problem solving, provide support during decision making, and assist with identifying potential Medicare fraud, error, or abuse. SHIP counselors will not recommend policies, companies, or insurance agents, but will provide free, confidential, and unbiased assistance.

The Nebraska SHIP offers a toll-free hotline that any person eligible for Medicare, relatives, friends, or providers can call for answers to insurance questions, to report potential fraud or abuse, or to arrange a meeting with a SHIP counselor.

JCHL awarded for efforts to improve rural stroke care

August 27, 2024/by Lana Likens

People who live in rural communities live an average of three years fewer than urban counterparts and have a 40% higher likelihood of developing heart disease and face a 30% increased risk for stroke mortality — a gap that has grown over the past two decades.[1],[2] Jefferson Community Health & Life is committed to changing that. For efforts to optimize stroke care and eliminate rural health care outcome disparities, Jefferson Community Health & Life has received the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines® – Stroke Rural Recognition Bronze award.

The American Heart Association, the world’s leading nonprofit organization focused on heart and brain health for all, recognizes the importance of health care services provided to people living in rural areas by rural hospitals that play a vital role in initiation of timely evidence-based care. For that reason, all rural hospitals participating in Get With The Guidelines – Stroke are eligible to receive award recognition based on a unique methodology focused on early acute stroke performance metrics.

“We are proud that our team at Jefferson Community Health & Life is being recognized for the important work we do every day to improve the lives of people in Jefferson County who are affected by stroke, giving them the best possible chance of recovery and survival,” said Erin Smith, JCH&L chief nursing officer.  “As a hospital in a rural community, we deal with characteristics, such as extended interfacility transportation times, and limited staffing resources. We’ve made it a goal to make sure those hurdles do not affect the standard of care our stoke patients receive.”

JCH&L’s goal is to provide exceptional quality care.

“Rural communities deserve high quality stroke care. I’m proud of our team for their commitment to stroke care excellence and this achievement,” Smith said.

The award recognizes hospitals for their efforts toward acute stroke care excellence demonstrated by composite score compliance to guideline-directed care for intravenous thrombolytic therapy, timely hospital inter-facility transfer, dysphagia screening, symptom timeline and deficit assessment documentation, emergency medical services communication, brain imaging and stroke expert consultation.

“Patients and health care professionals in Jefferson County face unique health care challenges and opportunities,” said Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., MPH, volunteer expert for the American Heart Association, co-author on “Call to Action: Rural Health: A Presidential Advisory From the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association” and co-director of the Center for Health Economics and Policy at the Institute for Public Health at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. “Jefferson Community Health & Life has furthered this important work to improve care for all Americans, regardless of where they live.”

Bill Welch of Fairbury will serve as the interim CEO at Jefferson Community Health & Life starting on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Lana Likens has served as temporary interim CEO since Aug. 19 when previous CEO Burke Kline resigned.

Welch served as CEO of Jefferson Community Health & Life from 1993 to 2013.  Since his retirement he has served as interim CEO at Crete, Friend, Central City, and Geneva.

“I look forward to return to JCH&L as  interim CEO and assisting Jefferson Community Health & Life through this transition,” Welch said.

During Welch’s tenure at JCH&L he helped JCH&L become a charter member of the Heartland Health Alliance, and served as chairman of the board. In 2009, Bill received the NHA’s Excellence in Service Award. In 2013 he received the NHA’s Meritorious Service Award.

JCH&L is now accepting applications for the CEO position.

“Our board is committed to find a leader for JCH&L who will help us continue to inspire our team, drive innovation, and lead JCH&L toward continued growth and success. We strive to inspire our area residents to a lifetime of health, and be a vital and trusted health care partner in Jefferson County and beyond,” said Trevor Steinmeyer, board chairman.

Kostal Receives Board Certification as a Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy

August 1, 2024/by Lana Likens

Travis Kostal, PT, DPT, has become board certified as a Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy. He was certified upon successful completion of coursework, field hours and an exam from the American Physical Therapy Association.

Kostal has been with JCH&L Sports Medicine and Rehab Services since 2013. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science from the University of Nebraska-Kearney, and his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Rockhurst University, Kansas City, MO. While at JCH&L, Kostal has implemented a concussion protocol including post-injury testing. He will continue to assess and treat athletes both on site and in the clinic.

The American Physical Therapy Association says the practice of sports physical therapy is based on a holistic approach of prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and education of the individual. The clinical specialist in sports physical therapy uses specialized clinical skills in a variety of settings, including sports medicine centers, hospital-based clinics, and other traditional athletic environments. The sports physical therapy specialty area within the physical therapy profession involves the physiological, psychological, pathological, and performance problems of athletes and attempts to prevent or correct these problems.

“I have always been interested and active in sports, and treating athletes has always been a passion of mine. I want to see athletes not only excel in their chosen sports, but stay physically and mentally healthy as they compete,” Kostal said.

JCH&L Sports Medicine and Rehab Services offers free consultations for area athletes in the clinic, weekly visits to Fairbury Public Schools for injury assessment and sideline coverage at many of Fairbury’s home sporting events.

Nicole Swartzendruber to Join JCH&L

July 19, 2024/by Lana Likens

Nicole Swartzendruber has known since she was a kid that she wanted a career in some area of health care. By the time she was in high school, she knew being a physician assistant was her goal. In December she will graduate as a physician assistant from the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and early in 2025 she will join Jefferson Community Health & Life.

Swartzendruber grew up on a farm outside of Shickley, where her family has a feedlot. She knows that a small town rural area is where she wants to have her career. She wants to help ensure rural residents have access to the quality and compassionate health care they need.

“I have a love for agriculture and community,” she said. “I like to be involved in the community.”

She graduated from Shickley Public Schools and was accepted in to the RHOP (Rural Health Opportunities Program.) She got her bachelor of science form Wayne State College in biology, and is currently in physician assistant school at UNMC. She said she has loved her training to be a physician assistant, and is enjoying her rotations. She said she chose rotations to help her be prepared for and effective in a rural general practice when she graduates. She had one rotation at Jefferson Community Health & Life in November-December 2023. She is especially looking forward to a rotation in Kenya for six weeks in the fall.

Besides her love of health care, during college she has worked in fire and rescue.

Outside of work she enjoys spending time with her family. She is engaged to Brandon Huebner, who works in law enforcement. Her parents, Mark and Donna Swartzendruber, have a feedlot at Shickley. Her sister Megan is married and has two children. Her brother Caleb lives at home. She has her own small cow-calf herd, enjoys recreational sports and enjoys reading.

Jefferson Community Health and Life is happy to welcome her to our team of family medical providers. She will join Dr. Craig Shumard, Dr. Rebecca Stroklund, Dr. Brett Wergin, Rick Blum PA-C, Megan Knutson FNP-C, Keegan Williams FNP-C, and Kensly Williams PA-C. JCH&L continues to recruit for providers. Our goal is to employ 4 physicians and 6 advanced practice providers.

Narayan, Taylor, Afuh Leaving JCH&L

July 2, 2024/by Lana Likens

Dr. Madhav Narayan, Bryce Taylor, PA-C, and Kirisha Afuh, FNP-C, will be leaving JCH&L. Taylor’s last day will be July 8. Dr. Narayan’s last day will be July 11. Afuh’s last day will be Aug. 28. All are leaving for other practices.

“We encourage those who considered any of these providers their primary care provider to choose another Fairbury Clinic provider for their care,” said Ashley Norden, clinic administrator.

“We remain able to care for our community’s family medicine needs,” Norden said. “We will still have 3 physicians, 2 nurse practitioners and 2 physician assistants ready and able to serve.”

JCH&L will have available to see patients: Dr. Craig Shumard, Dr. Rebecca Stroklund, Dr. Brett Wergin, Rick Blum PA-C, Megan Knutson FNP-C, Keegan Williams FNP-C, and Kensly Williams PA-C.

JCH&L is currently recruiting for both another physician and another Advanced Practice Provider.

“While we are sorry to lose all three of these excellent family medicine providers, we wish them the best in their new endeavors,” said Burke Kline, DHA, MHA, MBA, CHFP, FACHE.
