High School Students Get Hands-On Experience

February 17, 2017/by Lana Likens

Thirty-two excited (and maybe slightly nervous) high school students tried their hand at suturing and giving shots to oranges, taking blood pressures, and taking blood samples on Tuesday at the Southeast Community College Career Academy event at Jefferson Community Health & Life in Fairbury on Tuesday.

“We are always pleased for opportunities for Health Career Academy students to learn about the many health care careers, and have the opportunity to try hands-on activities,” said Adam Niederklein, SCC Career Academy Coordinator for the Southeast Nebraska Career Academy Partnership (SENCAP.)

While at JCH&L, students tried health care techniques themselves, and also learned about doing body composition analysis and other fitness skills; had a tour of the facility; learned about a range of health care careers; and learned the importance of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

SENCAP is a partnership between Southeast Community College and 38 school districts, offering high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to enroll in college level courses in fields in their area of interest: agriculture, business, criminal justice, education, health sciences, information technology, and manufacturing. Besides taking dual credit high school/college courses, the students have the opportunity to explore their career in a hands-on approach through job shadowing, field trips, professional speakers and annual events highlighting resume building, mock interviews and other career-related activities.

Jefferson Community Health & Life has worked with the SENCAP program in a variety of ways, including career exploration, tours, and shadowing. On Tuesday, they hosted 32 students and 3 educators from Fairbury, Fillmore Central, Thayer Central, Bruning-Davenport, Shickley, Norris and Meridian.

“This is a partnership which benefits not only the students, but also our community, as it encourages young people to consider career opportunities in health care,” said Lana Likens, JCH&L director of public relations.

Brush Up Driving Skills: AARP Smart Driver Course

February 15, 2017/by Lana Likens

Jefferson Community Health & Life Sterling Connection will offer the AARP Smart Driving Course on Thursday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the JCH&L conference room. Participants may bring a sack lunch or purchase lunch in the JCH&L cafeteria.

Traffic statistics show that older adults overall are safe drivers with good driving records. However, medical conditions, certain medications and age-related changes in physical and mental function can increase the risk of crashes and injury among older drivers. It is critically important that older drivers make driving safely a personal priority. AARP Driver Safety is committed to helping Americans 50 and older sustain mobility and safety as they age.

The four-hour research based course is offered by JCH&L Sterling Connection. Membership is not required in Sterling Connection or AARP. AARP members get a discount and must bring their AARP card to class. All participants must bring their driver’s license to class.

The cost of the class is $15 for AARP members or $20 for non-AARP members. Pre-registration is required by March 16. To register please call Lana Likens at (402) 729-6855.

Jefferson Community Health Center Announces New Name

January 23, 2017/by Lana Likens
Jefferson Community Health & Life logo

Jefferson Community Health & Life’s new logo, adopted in January 2017.

Jefferson Community Health Center and its health services have announced a new Commitment to Health initiative, and with it, a new name: Jefferson Community Health & Life.

The name change mirrors the organization’s newly expanded approach to healthcare in our local communities. As the industry’s core focus shifts from treating illness and injury to nurturing and sustaining overall health, leaders at Jefferson Community Health & Life are responding by aligning care delivery more closely with community-based health and life services.

“Of course, we are still the community hospital people know and trust for quality care during times of illness or injury,” said Chad Jurgens, chief executive officer. “Our new commitment is an extension of that mission – one that expands our reach beyond our hospital walls and into our community, enabling a deeper impact on the lives of those we serve.”

Through the seamless delivery of health and life care, Jurgens said, Jefferson Community Health & Life is committed to keeping people and families healthy over time, which goes far beyond treating them when they are sick.

The new care model at Jefferson Community Health & Life enhances and extends the services available to the community. For example, the organization plans to offer health coaches to help people with chronic diseases navigate their care; expand women’s health services; form new, health-based community partnerships to make healthy lifestyle options more accessible; and engage area residents with heightened access to health, fitness, and wellness programs at Burkley Fitness Center.

By building a more comprehensive continuum of care – and making services easily accessible where people live, work and play – Jefferson Community Health & Life leaders say the new endeavor will inspire healthy living to flourish throughout its entire service area.

“Through a combination of small steps and big leaps, we are embracing a Commitment to Health designed to keep quality healthcare exactly where it belongs: close to home,” said Jurgens.

Plans are underway to host a public event for the official launch of the new name in the spring. More information about the event will be posted on the Jefferson Community Health & Life website and social media. Click here for more information about the organization’s Commitment to Health.
