Two New PAs Joining Jefferson Community Health & Life

January 22, 2018/by Lana Likens

Kelsey Cherry

For newly graduated Physician Assistants Tyler Maguire and Kelsey Cherry, the opportunity for positions at Jefferson Community Health & Life was a good fit. The two will both begin working as PAs at JCH&L on Feb. 12, seeing patients in JCH&L Fairbury Clinic and the emergency room.

“It was the right time and the right opportunity. I felt like I was at home again,” said Cherry.

Both grew up in rural Nebraska communities – Maguire in Norfolk and Cherry in Monroe. Both have known they wanted to work in health care, and specifically in a small community, for some time.

“Fairbury fit in perfectly with that,” Maguire said.

Cherry said her community’s health provider was a Physician Assistant, and that demonstrated to her how important a PA’s role is.

“I saw how big of an impact they had on a small community,” she said.

Each finished their PA program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in December 2017 with a Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies, and will take their boards in January. Once they pass their boards, each will be a Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C.)

Both are proponents of preventative health. Helping people to learn to stay healthy and deal proactively with their health is something they are excited about. With bachelor’s degrees in nutrition, health and exercise, they are well equipped to help their patients with all aspects of health. Cherry said she is particularly interested in women’s health, and Maguire said he particularly enjoys the older population.

Maguire and Cherry were initially amazed that Fairbury had a facility like JCH&L Burkley Fitness Center. It is a great tool for people who are finding ways to become healthier and stay healthy.

JCH&L Chad Jurgens said he is pleased to have Maguire and Cherry coming on board soon.

“We’re excited to have two new health care providers coming to our community to join our team and help us inspire our community to a lifetime of health,” Jurgens said.

Outside of work, Maguire enjoys being outdoors, including hunting, fishing and camping. He enjoys running (he participated in cross country and track in high school) and anything competitive. He enjoys Husker football and fantasy football.

Cherry enjoys softball and Do It Yourself projects. She said she is excited to get a house and be able to do some projects.

Together, the two enjoy their Boston Terrier, and playing board games and card games.

Maguire and Cherry will begin work on Feb. 12.
