JCH&L to Offer Wound Clinic

August 19, 2019/by Lana Likens

A wound clinic will be offered monthly at JCH&L beginning Wednesday, Sept. 11. Dr. Edmundo Rivera, a specialist in the area of wound care with the Lincoln Surgical Center will be the physician specialist.

If you have a wound that is slow in healing, you may benefit from the wound clinic. The clinic will treat all types of chronic, nonhealing wounds, including diabetic ulcers, surgical wounds, pressure ulcers, traumatic wounds, burns and others. The clinic will help determine why a wound isn’t healing, and use a variety of clinical treatments, therapies and support services to treat chronic wounds. Our goal is to facilitate your healing process.  A variety of outpatient wound treatment services are available to assist in treatment plans as ordered by the physician – including dressing changes and wound debridement by JCH&L Sports Medicine and Rehab Services and outpatient nurses.

“JCH&L is pleased to be able to offer a wound clinic for our area residents. We understand that wounds which aren’t healing are a health concern and sometimes require advanced treatment to get you on the path to healing,” said Chad Jurgens, CEO. “Our goal is to provide the help that is needed.”

Dr. Rivera joined the Lincoln Surgical Group, P.C., in August 2015. He is a surgeon with the American Burn Association, is board certified in surgical critical care and general surgery, and completed fellowships in surgical critical care and burns. He completed his bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern California, his MD from Creighton University School of Medicine, and completed an internship and residency in general surgery at Creighton University Medical Center.

Dr. Rivera also sees patients at wound clinics at CHI-St. Elizabeth’s, Thayer County Health Services and Fillmore County Hospital.

Visit with your family medicine provider about whether a referral to Dr. Rivera would be beneficial to you. For more information or to make an appointment, call Jefferson Community Health & Life Outpatient Services at 402-729-6851.

JCH&L Reaches Safety Milestone

July 23, 2019/by Lana Likens

Jefferson Community Health & Life reached an important safety milestone on July 19: logging an entire year without an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recordable incident.

“With about 260 staff members, that means we have achieved 347,637 total labor hours without a serious injury,” said Patrick Hoins, JCH&L Facilities Director. “We are proud of the ownership our staff has taken in ensuring their own safety, and the safety of others.”

This includes all areas of JCH&L: health center, long-term care, fitness center, and clinics. An OSHA recordable injury or illness includes work-related injury or illness that results in days away from work, restricted work, or transfer to another job, and in general any work-related injury or illness requiring medical treatment beyond first aid.

“Our safety process is built from the iceberg model, encouraging all staff to find hazards and report them so they can be taken care of before anyone gets hurt,” Hoins said.

In 2019, staff members have reported 25 near misses or unsafe conditions. When an unsafe condition or near miss is reported, it is investigated as appropriate, reviewed by the safety committee, and action plans are developed as needed. All types of injuries and potential injuries are tracked and evaluated monthly. Information is shared with all departments about the basics of any incident, including causes and potential barriers to a safe working environment.

“Thank you to our conscientious staff and our active safety committee for their work to help us reach this milestone,” Hoins said.
